The extension announced on June 13th by Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of DHS, involves the reversal of the program’s termination that had been ordered by former President Donald Trump during his term in 2017 and 2018.

Agency – The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the extension of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program for individuals from countries such as El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Nepal. This time, it will be mandatory to submit re-registration applications within the established timeframe.

This extension will allow approximately 239,000 Salvadorans, 76,000 Hondurans, 4,000 Nicaraguans, and 14,500 Nepalis to re-register to maintain their valid work permits and renew their driver’s licenses. It also protects them from deportations and grants them the possibility to apply for a travel permit in case they wish to visit their country of origin.

Beneficiaries from each nationality will have a 60-day period to enroll, in different stages, according to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). They will not accept new applications and will not process re-registrations before the established timelines.

TPS re-registration dates:

El Salvador, for 18 months, from September 10, 2023, to March 9, 2025 (the 60-day re-registration period will run from July 12, 2023, to September 10, 2023);
Honduras, for 18 months, from January 6, 2024, to July 5, 2025 (the 60-day re-registration period will run from November 6, 2023, to January 5, 2024);
Nicaragua, for 18 months, from January 6, 2024, to July 5, 2025 (the 60-day re-registration period will run from November 6, 2023, to January 5, 2024);
Nepal, for 18 months, from December 25, 2023, to June 24, 2025 (the 60-day re-registration period will run from October 24, 2023, to December 23, 2023).

TPS is a program that was launched in 1999 with the aim of providing immigration relief to individuals from countries whose conditions temporarily prevent citizens from returning safely, according to USCIS.
